Agglutination activities of Falcata japonica K. and Dolichos biflorus to red blood cells and lymphocytes


Abstract
The present communication describes the immunohematological differences between anti-A, lectin prepared from Korea native Falcata japonica K. and anti-A, lectin from the United States of America native Dolichos biflorus.
To clear the immunohematological differences of both lectins, studies on agglutination activities to human red cells, lymphocytes and various animal red blood cells, absorption test by red blood cells and human saliva, agglutination titer to red blood cells and lymphocytes and agglutination inhibition test by human saliva and various sugars were performed, and can be summerized as the followings: Even though Falcata japonica K. was made crude extract, it revealed only A, type specificity while crude extract of Dolichos biflorus has A type specificity, but of which Az type specificity can be removed by absorption with Az red cells easily. The animal red blood cells such as bovine, horse, sheep, dog, hog, rabbit, mouse, guinea pig, chicken, cat, rat and goat were not agglutinated by extract of Falcata japonica K., while the hog red blood cells were strongly agglutinated by extract of Dolichos biflorus. Both extracts of Falcata japonica K. and Dolichos biflorus not only agglutinated human red blood cells also A, and A,B type lymphocytes too. The agglutination activities of both extracts were inhibited by saliva of A, and A,B type secretors, but failed to be inhibited by saliva of B, O type secretors and all types of non secretors.
By adding N-acetylgalactosamine, A, type specificity of both extracts to red blood cells and lymphocytes were inhibited.
In conclusion, anti-A, lectin prepared from Korea native Falcata japonica K. revealed more A, type specificity than anti-A, lectin prepared from the United States of America native Dolichos biflorus.
